Most people wouldn't look at an old family photograph and
think "This would really look good engraved into a piece of marble." We
wouldn't plan to give the happy couple a bottle of champagne with their
wedding date engraved into it.
But Pat and Jennifer Kaveney do. At their new company,
Express Laser Engraving in New Richmond, the Kaveneys are using modern
technology to create all sorts of unique pieces most of us would have
never thought possible.
With the help of a large machine and some special
software, the Kaveneys' can engrave just about anything- typically into a
wood or imitation marble plaque.
"We've done wedding invitations,

champagne glasses,
mirrors, pictures of the family pet, company mission statements,
industrial signage, name plates, certificates of acheivement.." said
Jennifer Kaveney. "If we haven't done it, chances are we can try it. We
can do whatever size you want, but 18 X 24 is the largest plaque we can
do.
Woods used include cherry, basswood, butternut and oak.
The company provides the supplies. But engraving isn't all the new company
does.
"We can transfer photos onto wood, leather, glass, or
almost any surface," Pat Kaveney said. "Like taking a picture of a
baseball team and transferring it onto a plaque for the coach or a wedding
group, or almost anything. It looks so much better than a picture."
Prices for engraving and photo transfers range from $9.99
for a coffee mug to $50 for a 12X18.
In their first weeks of business, the Kaveneys have
already created more pieces then you can count.
"The reception has been great," Pat said. "It's surprising
how much industrial signage there is to do."
It's difficult to tell the Kaveneys haven't been doing
this all their lives. But in fact, they are newcomers to the engraving
world.
Formerly the couple owned and operated the B&E Welding on
Highway 65 in New Richmond before selling it to Praxair five years ago.
"We both stayed on for four years and then we spent the
last year catching up on all the things we wanted to do," Pat said. "I
always had an interest in engraving, so we bought a machine and got
started.
The Kaveneys, who still own the property on and
surrounding Praxair, turned an unused shop at the back of the property
into their new business.
"We're really excited about this," Pat said.
